5 Reasons You Should Blog

After approximately 2 years, Youth Are Awesome has finally hit the 2600 post mark! And you’re probably wondering why I didn’t tell you about this when we passed a nicer number like 2500, right? Well, I don’t like to be conventional…plus it is way more fun to surprise you guys with a random number! Hurray, unexpected pleasantries.

So what’s so great about blogging and Youth Are Awesome? I joined around a year and a half ago thanks to some of the other members (one of them which is Lisa!), I have learned so much! Not only should you consider blogging (and not just reposting memes on Tumblr), but you should join our team! Read yet another one of my lists to understand what I mean.

We are reacting to something...epic!

5. It helps with your memory

At least it did for me. Whenever I go to events, I don’t want to scribble down my thoughts and feelings; I would like to enjoy the event or activity! But I am compelled to share things with readers, so I have to train myself to remember the details and the most interesting thoughts I’ve collected during the event. Whether it is watching a movie, attending an event or sharing a story; remembering what you did in the past is essential in life…and blogging!

4. You’re more knowledgeable

If you’re trying to blog about one thing, then you essentially have to become an expert in it. If you already know quite a bit about something and can write about it as well, then blogging is perfect for you! Otherwise you will have to research a bit so that you actually sound like you know what you’re doing (I’m totally not winging it with this blog…). I thought I knew about games and technology, but now I realize that I have to catch up on all my readings involving those subjects. Usually if you can’t teach or talk about a subject adequately, then it’s a clear sign that you don’t know enough about it. So that’s why blogging is a great way to encourage you to learn something outside of school!

3. People finally understand you

If you guys haven’t figured it out already, I have a difficult time conveying my thoughts in a concise and comprehensible manner. Of course text can be easily edited and fixed, however people can’t really “edit” their own style. Unless they have an editor or someone nagging about every detail in a piece of work. But when you know that hundreds of people are reading your blog, you have to get better at writing, speaking or whatever medium you decide to do your blog in. Needless to say, blogging helps you communicate better.

2. You have more stories to share

When you want to be a more interesting blogger, you kind of force yourself to do things. Going to concerts, festivals, and so forth definitely broadens your life. And once you found the words to share with the public, you’ll be able to relay them to your friends and they will be super impressed. That’s right! I mean, I’m not trying to advocate that blogging is a great ego-booster and something to boast about…but you don’t want to be that person in the group who has nothing to share about their lives, right? Right.

Plus, blogging gives you opportunities that you otherwise cannot obtain. Being a writer and blogger is credible, so you could possibly get an interview with a group or access to events that are exclusive to certain people. It makes you feel special, really; and it is super cool to be a part of that exclusive group!

1. It is rewarding and tons of fun

Like most opportunities outside of doing things at home, it is totally rewarding in every way. You gain a lot of experience, knowledge and as a perk–free stuff! Perhaps you get tickets to a concert, play or movie; whatever it is, blogging about whatever your heart desires is a ton of fun. Maybe I’m weird and I like to type a lot…but I also love to share cool things with people. Especially free stuff.

And I am so very grateful for being with Youth Are Awesome and for Telus! Thanks to them, YAA has grown substantially since I’ve started. Although doing things on your own and then having a place to publish your ideas and experiences is nice; it is even better when you don’t have to dig the internet for those opportunities and instead they are given to you. Thank you, Youth Are Awesome, for keeping me here! And thank you Telus, for giving me the opportunity to go to events and try new foods when I otherwise could not.

So…what are you waiting for? JOIN US! We’ve got handmade cookies 🙂
