Are fans taking fiction too far?

I am sure everyone reading this has a book series, movie, or television show that they are obsessed about. That one where you count down the days until the next episode, that one that you buy all the merchandise from so now you have no room in your closet for normal clothes. I get it; I have the same problem. There is usually that couple or even two characters not together that you wish were. I am sure that some of you would go to crazy extents to see these two characters together. The only way you can do that is to check out some fan fiction.

Fan fiction is really quite cool in some ways. It lets you be creative and satisfy your desire for two characters to be together. Some of them are quite cute – they can be about them building their relationship, going on dates, just your average cheesy/trashy romance novel, but unfortunately most of them end up being erotic in some way shape or form. The worst part of it all is that most of these fan fiction are written by people as young as 12. This leads me to the question, is fan fiction healthy or even appropriate at all?

I think it depends on the situation. I support in writing to show creativity, thoughts or feelings; however, not for the purpose of erotic fiction. It’s great to make or read a cute little romance story between your two favorite characters but it is definitely not okay, at this age, to be making or reading something as erotic as fan fiction can be. I do understand and have come across the fact that some books you read at this age do have some sexual things in them, which isn’t a problem because let’s face it, sex is a real thing that can happen with teenagers our age. However, I have never came across a book which has had extreme detail within the “sex scene” as much as fan fiction has. Books and literature, in most cases, are written by young adults or adults, who have written these scenes to inform readers. The main purpose of fan fiction is to entertain, which in some cases is written by a way younger person. Did you know that 50 Shades of Grey, a well-known erotic novel, was originally written as Twilight fan fiction?

Conclusion: fan fiction is a great way to express emotions, to a certain extent. Otherwise, it is just plain creepy.
