The Curry Bowl: Fernie B.C.’s Curry Destination

Even for those who are not visiting Fernie, if you’re passing through on highway 3 The Curry Bowl is an a quick turn off, very easily accessible for those wishing to make a meal stop, yet not wanting a diet of fast food. However, those planning on going should know that the restaurant is not open until 5pm; only dinner service is available.

The only dish I have ever ordered at The Curry Bowl is their Veggie Donburi; a dish that includes a variety of mixed veggies and four strips of fried tofu over rice. The dish is

huge, I only ever get half way through, but for those doing intense physical activities (skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, ext.) the veggie donburi is great size to fill a hungry stomach. The most delicious part of the meal is the peanut sauce. Rich, peanut-y, and perfectly spiced, their sauce is one I have never been able to replicate. The sauce makes this healthy dish, the finishing touch, without it one would be eating a bland bowl of vegetables.

My favorite drink to order is the limonade. Tasty, limey, and thirst-quenching, this drink has lots of flavour, but not the signature over-sweetened assault of a gas station lemonade or limeade. In winter, when thoughts of a chilled drink make my cold-

stiffened hands quiver in dismay, I get their Indian Chai, a softly spiced, milky, tea. Their chai is not sweet in the least, so for those accustomed to Westernized chai, sugar will be needed.

Over the years Curry Bowl has changed owners several times and over these transitions I find the deliciousness has made a slight, yet noticeable, decline. The biggest change is in the tofu; last trip one of mine was broken and two of them were overcooked, where the other two were undercooked. However, that being said, the peanut sauce is still fantastic, and definitely worth a trip.

So if your ever in Fernie, and feel like some delicious Asian cuisine stop by 931 7th Avenue, and be sure to sample the peanut sauce!
