The issue we should be focusing on: Stopping the explotation of child soldiers

Kony 2012 has the whole world in a flurry- going viral with over 1.2 million hits in two days, trending on Twitter and filling status updates on Facebook. Social media was the fuel that launched the campaign, but it has be the view of informed and active citizens that focuses on the real issue: stopping the exploitation of child soldiers.

This situation of an African warlord accused of committing crimes against humanity and using child soldiers in their army isn’t new – in fact, here is a map released by the UN of the use of child soldiers that might surprise you. However, Kony 2012, I believe, is not focusing on the real issue at hand.

The important issue we need to focus on is that of child soldiers. We need to stop the exploitation of children in war! We need to find a way to prevent their recruitment, stop their exploitation and rehabilitate their recovery to reintegrate them into society. These are vulnerable populations that we want to get out of harm’s way, away from any conflictual situation. We need to help reintegrate a society that has grown up in war and conflict and this can be done by building up communities and aiding those who are affected by conflict.

I believe that as very fortunate citizens of the world, we should be able to make informed decisions before supporting a cause. I’ve provided some media links and websites to help you critically avoid any potential bandwagons.

Bui. Lisa Bui. I’m a self asserted History and English nerd but anything extreme, from mountain biking to skydiving, and you can count me in. I enjoy classical music to the point that I swear the sound of C-Train doors closing beep to Beethoven’s Fur Elise. My favourite novel is Sherlock Holmes. What’s the funniest thing about me? I burst into laughter when anyone ever says the word “strange”.
