Oscar’s New Home

A follow up on Sunday evenings 82nd Academy Awards! The hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin started the ceremony with a glamorous entrance being lowered from the ceiling and humor was present throughout the show, especially ones regarding Avatar. (Ben Stiller’s Na’vi makeup suits him)

Speaking of Avatar, the movie was highly anticipated and was cinematically stunning which paid off, earning it the title of ‘highest grossing film of all time in North America.  So it came as no surprise when it got nominated for 9 Academy Awards, and many expected it to clean out the award shelves at the Oscars. As it turns out, an unexpected underdog bumped Avatar off and sweep the stage, winning a total of 6 Oscars. (The critics who disliked Avatar must have been rejoicing!)

The Hurt Locker won in the categories of: Directing ,Film Editing, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Writing (Original Screenplay), and last but not least, Best Picture.

To be honest I have not heard much of about this movie until Sunday evening but from the sounds of it, it is definitely a movie worth checking out. Don’t worry Avatar did not leave empty handed.  It won in the categories for Best Visual Effects, Cinematography, and Art Direction.

Sandra Bullock received Leading Actress for the Blind Side (a pretty obvious win), and Jeff Bridges for Leading Actor for Crazy Heart. The Supporting Actor/Actresses Award went to Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds and Mo’Nique for Precious (such a strong heartfelt movie!).

Other notable awards went to the cute animated movie Up for best Animation, and Music (Original Score), The Cove for best Documentary, The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos) for Best Foreign Language Film, and The Young Victoria for Best Costume Design. Star Trek fans don’t be disappointed; at least the film received an award for the Best Makeup.

At last year’s 81st Academy Award, popular movies such as: The Dark Knight, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, and Iron Man were all nominated for numerous awards. Who left at the end of the night with an entourage of 8 golden Oscars? Slumdog Millionaire of course!  This just goes to show not to underestimate the ‘underdogs’!

Quick fun fact: The 24k gold covered Oscar weighs 8 and a half pounds– pretty heavy for a small guy!
