Pure exhilaration in Video Games LIVE

Some excited fans

Let’s begin with a poem…

Roses are #FF0000, violets are #0000FF, and all your base are belong to us. (In a concert hall full of fellow nerds, geeks, and gamers alike, I wasn’t at all embarrassed to find this phrase funny.)

What Video Games Live is all about

Two words: PURE EPICNESS. Myself being an enthusiastic gamer and my friend, a fish out of water concerning video games, the impression that Video Games Live (VGL) left us with was in absolute awe and enraptured amazement. VGL is a concert event that supports the awesome culture and art that video games are, and it features the very best music from the most popular games of our time. An excellent orchestra and choir, along with incredible and cutting edge video footage, solo performers and live action make for an unbelievable and enthralling experience! The show combines the power of a symphony orchestra and excitement of a rock concert for one unique concert.

Gamer or not, this one-of-a-kind concert will blow you away

Tommy Tallarico, amazing industry veteran and renowned video games composter, was the incredible electrical guitarist that gave the music played at VGL the electrifying and explosive  power most gamers are familiar with. On the widescreen, Tommy enthusiastically encouraged the audience to yell out with excitement anytime the incredible cinematic video and wonderful music evoked joyful recognition or impressive adventure. Old school video games dominated the concert. VGL included music from the earliest video games, Pong and Pac-Man, to fantastic favourites like Assassin’s Creed, Sonic, Megaman, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy, God of War, The Legend of Zelda and Halo. The breathtaking symphony orchestra, played live and in real time the animated chords of adventure and heroism, fantasy and larger-than-life action of the video games.

Video Games pianist Martin Leung

The Highlight of Video Games Live

The solo performers that came out to perform at VGL were absolutely exceptional sights to behold. Martin Leung, internationally acclaimed video games pianist, played various Final Fantasy scores with astounding finesse, style and excitement. He gained much applause and enthusiasm when he played blindfolded and continued to bounce happily in his seat to the tune. The flute soloist, Laura “Flue Link” Intravia dressed up in the elegant and traditional journeyman dress of Link, as the main protagonist video gamers play in the Legend of Zelda series, and his fairy companion. A battle of the flutes, Laura Intravia commands the stage as her skilful and enthralling playing of amazing sound.

An all consuming passion…

Video Games Lives is the ultimate experience for those that want to experience live the eerie heroism and mystical darkness of Castlevania or the fast paced adrenaline rush of raw power and glory in the God of War. Personally, VGL was a chance for me to enter into a world of exhilaration and fantasy of earlier times or magical worlds of wonder and adventure.

Thank you to VGL for providing seats to this wonderful concert! I recommend for all, gamer or not, young or old, to experience the pure exhilaration of this totally immersive live-action concert, and to come out to the next VGL tour in Calgary. To find out more about Video Games Live, click here.

Bui. Lisa Bui. I’m a self asserted History and English nerd but anything extreme, from mountain biking to skydiving, and you can count me in. I enjoy classical music to the point that I swear the sound of C-Train doors closing beep to Beethoven’s Fur Elise. My favourite novel is Sherlock Holmes. What’s the funniest thing about me? I burst into laughter when anyone ever says the word “strange”.
