Food Truck Review: The Purple Pastry Chef!

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, one of the food trucks here in Calgary that you definitely must track down is The Purple Pastry Chef. Known for its delicacies that look too pretty to eat, this truck has definitely made its mark in Calgary.

Before I headed out on my foray, I checked around the Internet to try and find out some of the choices I’d have when I arrived at the truck. I am not pleased to say that each came up empty-handed. While I was browsing on the web, I only found links for their main store and none about items offered on the truck. However, I still set out to see what was on location at the truck itself.

When I saw it, I was attracted immediately by the design of the food truck. I’d have to say that it’s a contender for the title “Most Inviting,” as it immediately appeals not only to your inner sweets-lover but also to that little kid inside your body who is dying to get out into the world.

Releasing all my inhibitions, I ran up and looked to see what the truck offered. I was amazed! The cupcakes could not possibly be edible! Here were butterflies, straws, flowers, and all sorts of other funky designs which I did not think were edible. Of course, they were.

The flavor selections were impeccable. There was frosting and icing of all sorts and the women working pointed out the various tastes that were on display.

I ended up ordering the white chocolate and rose water cupcake after having been told by a friend that it’s one of the better ones she had tried. I bit in and was almost immediately sure that it looked a lot better than it actually tasted. I don’t know if it’s because I don’t have much of a sweet tooth myself, but the cupcake was way too sugary! The frosting was the type that you quickly got tired of after a few bites.

To overcome this bias, I asked one of my good friends who had come with me that day to also try the cupcake I ordered. Unfortunately, she also had a similar reaction. While the cupcake was a marvel to look at, the eating itself was not so marvelous. Being that she is a true sweet-lover, I trust her opinion enough to write it here.

After trying some other cupcakes and also sampling a bit of the cake, we came to the following conclusions about the Purple Pastry Chef food truck. One major note that we made is that all you who go there should definitely photograph the food you buy! The creations made by the women of the food truck are of the utmost creativity.

As for everything else….

Taste – 3/5
Price – 2.5/5

*Note – I really was not pleased about the price! The cupcakes were around $4 each. I have a feeling that even Crave cupcakes and other chain stores would offer tastier cupcakes than this. Maybe it’s the amount of time and detail that goes into making these treats that makes their prices so high? All in all, definitely not something you would buy again and again were you an average teenager with empty pockets.

Truck Design – 5/5
Service [Friendliness, Helpfulness] – 4.5/5

Ultimately, this truck represents something that you must try in order to really for your own opinion. Although I did not have the greatest time ordering a few items and dealing with price problems and hyper-sugaryness, that doesn’t mean that all you food truck lovers won’t be able to enjoy yourselves.

To contact this food truck, you can visit their website or follow them on Twitter where they update their location daily.
