Remembrance Day and the Poppy

November 11th.  A time to reflect on the sacrifices of civilians and soldiers who were part of the war.  A time to thank the soldiers who fought for our freedom in the wars.

It’s celebrated on November 11th because it signifies the end of World War I on that date in 1918.  The formal end of World War I was at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The poppy is a national symbol of remembrance for the soldiers who bled for our freedom.  It is based off the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae.  The poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields in the war, and because of this the government declared them a symbol of remembrance.
