What to see in YYC: Weekend Preview February 20-22, 2015

Once again, another weekend is fast approaching. It feels like no time at all has passed since the 5-day weekend and for those who were busy the majority of that time (and that would have to be me…), may this be the time to finally relax and indulge in these great events occurring in our city this weekend.


Coldest Night of the Year 2015 – February 21st (Sat)

A charity event that raises money for the hungry, hurting, and homeless, this family-friendly walk allows individuals to get just a slight sense of the hardships faced by those who are homeless. Registration is still open and will only take around 5 minutes and it’s not too late to get a few pledges in. Hurry before time runs out to walk 2, 5, or 10km for a great cause!

Time: 4:00-8:00pm

Price: $25 registration fee

TIFF Canada’s Top 10 Film Festival: Student Shorts – February 21st (Sat)

Canada’s most prestigious film festival is coming to Calgary with its Top 10 series. This particular event features 10 short films produced by youth around Canada and tackles issues that range from abuse to the uncertain future. The programme is rated 14A. Check out the website to see the many other films featured in this festival, which runs from the 20th to the 26th.

Time: 3:00pm

Price: $8 for youth ages 13-17 with appropriate ID, $10 for adults

February Classic III at Spruce Meadows – February 21st and 22nd (Sat and Sun)

Come down to Spruce Meadows over the weekend for this free, indoor, and family-appropriate show jumping event. Enjoy watching the races, hot chocolate, and a walk-though of the barns.

Time: 8:00am to 6:30pm Saturday, 8:00am to 6:15pm Sunday

Price: Complimentary admission and parking

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – February 20th, 21st, and 22nd (Fri, Sat, and Sun)

Based on the Disney movie of the same name, this broadway hit promises to stun audiences with its sets and performances. Though this event is pricier than the rest on this list, don’t miss out on this live interpretation of a childhood classic. The show will run for 2 hours and 10 minutes with a 15 minute intermission in between.

Time: Friday at 7:30pm, Saturday at 2:00pm or 7:30pm, Sunday at 1:00pm or 6:30pm

Price: Tickets range in prices (starts at $80)
