Holiday Cheer with: The Calgary Civic Symphony’s A Child’s Christmas 2

Holiday cheer can emerge from the cup of warm cocoa or a ride down a snowy hill. I love to listen to lively and warm music to remind myself of the warmth the holidays bring and The Calgary Civic Symphony’s A Child’s Christmas did just that. An afternoon concert, with guests the Mayor of Calgary Naheed Nenshi,  the exciting and talented choir Cum Vino Cantus we knew we in for a great show!

Right off the start, Handel’s Messiah, a classic melody that the Civic Symphony brought great warmth and enthusiasm. Classics were performed with great finesse and energy to enrapture even the the most sleepy child dreaming of sugar plums, Gloria, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, I Want a Hippopotamus, O come All Ye Faithful  and (one of my all time favourite Christmas carols) The Messiah- Hallelujah Chorus. What I loved about the concert, (for many smiley children as well) was that we were not just watching the Civic Symphony just play, but were invited to sing-along with Cum Vino Cantus, whose voices filled the concert hall with palpable feeling of holiday cheer and excitement.

The evening was truly enchanted with Mayor Nenshi narrating Serge Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, bringing a larger- than- life story alive. Brass music in the second half of the concert completed the enchanting children’s Christmas, it’s only when you hear the horns belting out the classic melody’s of Christmas that gets me off my feet to dance merrily. In addition to watching at home the traditional movie, consider bringing an evening alive by catching live holiday music in the city, because I am sure that it will bring out the children’s love of Christmas in even the Grinch this year. I want to thank Tokie Brideaux @CalMusicEvents for providing tickets to such an excellent event!

Bui. Lisa Bui. I’m a self asserted History and English nerd but anything extreme, from mountain biking to skydiving, and you can count me in. I enjoy classical music to the point that I swear the sound of C-Train doors closing beep to Beethoven’s Fur Elise. My favourite novel is Sherlock Holmes. What’s the funniest thing about me? I burst into laughter when anyone ever says the word “strange”.

  1. I will be on an business related tour to Calgary from 23rd to 29th Dec. I guess I will use the period more for business goals. Have booked my stay at Suntree Place of Sunbeam Suites in the city. Will tune into such kind of songs if I get time. 🙂 BDW I love lively and warm music.

  2. Hi Lisa,
As President of and violinist in the Civic Symphony I would love to express my gratitude for your review. For us volunteer musicians, music is a labor of love. We really enjoy putting on this show and always come away from a concert feeling like we’ve made a positive difference in each audience member’s heart.
We hope to see you at our next concert on February 24th.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from your friends at the Civic Symphony!

  3. Thanks so much Manon!

I truly enjoyed the performance! Music is enjoyed when the musicians put their heart and soul into the music, and that’s what the Calgary Civic Symphony did with a Child’s Christmas 2.

    Happy Holidays,
    Lisa
