March Guide: Drama, Music & More

One month into second semester and already we’re well into the month of March! If you’ve found yourself slightly stressed and looking for a break from school, or just looking for a fun getaway, here are a number of events and fun things you can look out for this month:


 

See a Drama Production!

1. King Lear

Calgary Theatre presents “King Lear” source

Calgary theatre presents their spring production of Shakespeare’s, King Lear. The opening show starts on Friday March 13 at 8:00 pm, and will run until April 12. If you go on Saturday March 14, the show will run on a “pay what you can” basis and tickets cost however much you are able to pay. Visit Calgary Theatre’s website for additional details.


 

2. Taking Flight: Festival of Student Work

University of Calgary Presents – Taking Flight: Festival of Student Works

This annual student festival held by the University of Calgary showcases a number of performances ranging from stage readings to one act plays performed by some of the world’s renowned playwrights. Shows open on March 31 and run until April 11.

 

3. The Book of Mormon

Broadway’s The Book of Mormon

The multiple award-winning Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon, is finally coming to Calgary! Shows will run from March 31 to April 5.


Listen up! Here are some musical performances to watch:

1. Mozart & Strauss: The Spirit of Vienna

Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra presents Mozart & Strauss: The Spirit of Vienna  source

Go for a night of viennese waltzing on March 6 and 7 with CPO’s Spirit of Vienna. The performance will include pieces from  R. Strauss’ delightful Rosenkavalier Suite and Ravel’s La valse.

2. Cosi fan tutte

If you have yet to see an opera, try putting that in your bucket list this month. The CCOC will be presenting one of Mozart’s most beloved comical opera, Cosi fan tutte.

3. Ok Go

Ok Go is a new alt-indie group from Chicago, and will be performing in the University of Calgary on Friday March 27. Find more details for this band here!

1. Big Taste Calgary, Calgary’s Foodie Festival

Downtown Calgary presents their yearly 10 day dining festival. Restaurants all over the city will be featuring special dining options for lunch and dinner. You can also buy tickets to exclusive culinary events featuring food celebrities like John Gilchrist.

2. Calgary Story Slam: Wishes

Come watch the next story slam at the Rose & Crown

Calgary’s next story slam will be taking place at the Rose & Crown on March 12. The theme will revolve around ‘wishes’; join this event for a cool night of storytelling.

3. CAWST World Water Day Celebration

This event explores local and global water issues and will be held March 18 at the Devonian Gardens downtown. This event serves as a showcase for student groups working on local and global action projects through CAWST’s Youth Wavemakers program. Volunteer opportunities are available for this event as well!
