Paying Kids For Chores

If you google “Should We Pay Kids For Chores?” you would get websites debating whether we should or not. Would you pay your child for doing chores?

Pros

  • Responsibility

These chores will eventually become routine, and your child will adopt these habits. Soon, you won’t even have to ask them to do something, they’ll automatically do it themselves. This will help your child take care of themselves in the future.

  • Satisfaction

When the task has been completed, your child will enjoy the satisfaction of his/her allowance and a cleaner environment.

  • Motivation

Money can be motivating for children. As it is very exciting to have your own money. With their chore money they can earn, save, spend it on what they desire and in the process learn to manage their own money. If they are certain that they’ll be getting paid for doing a job well done, they’ll probably want to keep doing it.

Cons

  • Expectations

Though it may seem like a good idea to pay your child, they may start to think that you’ll reward them for every task you assign to them.

  • Lack Of Effort/ Poor Job

Your child will be excited to know that you’ll start paying them for doing chores, but they might get a bit to carried away. They may start doing things half-heartedly just for the money.

  • Unhelpful

Maybe paying them was effective before, but now it seemed to backfire. Maybe your child was getting tired of doing chores, no matter how much money you offered. You had to nag them to get something done
